The art of lampworking is an age old talent of ancient bead makers originating in Venice, Italy, and its surrounding islands. Murano, a small island near Venice, has been known for centuries for the lampwork bead making, and handblown glass works. As Venice became an international commercial center, Murano became the focal point of glass making. Venice and Murano have been the leaders in lampworking and handblowing beads as early as the 8th Century, and remain to this day the source for wholeale lampwork beads and Venetian beads. Although Lapwork beads by definition are beads created through fire, its methods and techniques have improved over the years. In ancinet times, simple tools have been used to carve and blow the glass of lampwork beads. Today, sophisticated tools and machinery were created to replicate the ancient methods of lampworking. Up to date machinery allows wholesale lampwork beads to be created, in larger bulk quantities.
